Harper’s Bazaar Short Story Competition

Do you love fashion? Do you love writing? Better yet do you love writing about Fashion? Yes? Then we think you will be interested in this…The luxury fashion magazine Harper’s Bazaar is giving you a once in a lifetime opportunity to have your original short story published. Whether you are a published writer or simply aspiring to be one then here is your chance to have your story published in the May 2014 issue of Harper’s Bazaar.

Here’s the scoop – Harper’s Bazaar wants a unique 3,000-word short story on the subject of ‘Spring’ to feature in their sophisticated, elegant and provocative fashion magazine. Not only will one talented person have their story published in the magazine but they will also win a choice from first-edition books from Asprey’s Fine and Rare Books Department up to the value of £3000. And last but most certainly not least; they will win a fantastic week long retreat to Eilean Shona House, on a beautiful 2,000-acre private island off the coast of Scotland. The same private Island that is famously known for being where JM Barrie wrote his wonderful and iconic screenplay for Peter Pan. It is a writers dream!

Harper’s Bazaar is know for its literary heritage, with authors such as Nancy Mitford, Evelyn Waugh, WH Auden, Virginia Woolf, and Truman Capote having contributed to the magazine in the past. As well as them, this year a wide variety of writers including Ali Smith, Jeanette Winterson and Maggie O’Farrell (author of ‘The Hand That First Held Mine’ and ‘My Lover’s Lover’) contributed to the magazine.Justine Picardie, editor of Harper’s Bazaar and renowned author and journalist invites you to get creative and get writing so that your talent can be put to use as it is featured in the magazine. Picardie has said, ‘Harper’s Bazaar has an incredible literary tradition reaching back to its inaugural issue in 1867. The launch of our Short Story Prize both honours and perpetuates that heritage. We are thrilled to launch the prize in our most comprehensive fashion issue of the year, celebrating both first-class writing and intelligent fashion, and we look forward to revealing the winner early next year.’ Harper’s Bazaar is also hosting an exclusive literary festival on the beautiful island Mauritius. If this is to your interest then the festival is being held from 7 November with poetry and book readings, alongside author discussions and a grand gala dinner. Oscar winning actress Emma Thompson will be headlining the line-up. Have a think about what you would write about. It could be a life-changing event. Getting into Fashion College. Meeting your favourite designer, model or celebrity. Whatever makes you happy or makes you sad, or even if it brings goose bumps to your skin when you remember it. Write about what excites you and hope that it will excite the readers of Harper’s Bazaar as well.
