Jo Peel Exhibition at Pitfield

October 25th, 2012

This is a must see – Pitfield London’s edgiest exhibition to date sees street artist Jo Peel transform the gallery space into an enclave of graphic gritty illustrations, with flecks of youthful neon.

A serious contender in the urban contemporary scene, Jo Peel is regularly commissioned to paint huge exterior street works. With her own imitable style, artist Jo Peel uses acrylics and spray paint to confidently create a dialogue, in which she accurately records the urban landscape in front of her. Purposely including the elements of construction and decay, each exquisitely detailed painting carries rawness and reality; the artist pinpoints a moment in time with an inviting, warm and nostalgic tone.

Bringing the diversity and ever-changing nature of East London indoors, Jo Peel’s exhibition greets viewers with a stark black and white mural on the rear wall.  Collaborative products fuse shop and gallery space, cushions, lampshades, wallpaper, tea towels have all had the “Peel” treatment. Three limited edition designs have been created, featuring Pitfield London’s exterior, Brick Lane’s Beigel Bake and the Tea Building on Shoreditch High Street.

Jo Peel’s portrayal of London’s greyscale buildings and landscapes, complemented with a wonderfully loud bold colour scheme in Pitfield, ensures the curiosity shop is evolving once more.
